Robert WOODS (1856-?)

and Sarah PARSONS (c1868-?)

Robert Woods and Sarah Parsons married in the first quarter of 1889 in the Hambledon, Surrey registration district.  (They were not my direct ancestors.  Their youngest daughter married my grandmother's brother.)

Robert Woods was baptised on 28 December 1856 in Merrow, Surrey.  He was the son of James Woods (c1815-?) and Maria Ricketts (c1825-?).  He died after 1929.  When the 1881 census was recorded he was an unmarried 24 year old police constable lodging in the home of Jane Adamstone at 6 Orchard Cottages in Mertham, Surrey.

Sarah Parsons was born about 1868 in Dunsfold, Surrey.  She was the daughter of George Parsons (c1838-?) and Mary (c1843-?).  When the 1871 census was recorded she was 3 years old and living with her parents on Tickners Heath in Alfold, Surrey.  Her father was then a labourer.

When the 1891 census was recorded the couple and their young son were living at Garlands Cottages in Ewhurst, Surrey.  Robert was then a 33 year old domestic gardener and Sarah was 23 years old.  Also with them on census night was a 20 year old unmarried lodger, Harry Thompson who was a domestic groom.  In 1901 the family were living at New House Farm in Rudgwick, Sussex and Robert was a general labourer in a brickyard.

Robert Woods and Sarah Parsons had 7 known children:

  1. George A. R. Woods was born about 1889 in Alfold, Surrey.  He was a year old when the 1891 census was recorded.  In 1901 he was an 11 year old scholar.

  2. Harry Woods was born about 1892 in Ewhurst, Surrey.  He was 9 years old in 1901.

  3. Albert Woods was born about 1894 in Ewhurst.  In 1901 he was 8 years old.

  4. Mary L. Woods was born about 1895 in Guildford, Surrey.  She was 6 years old in 1901.

  5. John Woods was born about 1897 in Worplesdon, Surrey.  In 1901 he was 4 years old.

  6. Edith G. S. Woods was born about 1899 in Alfold.  she was 2 years old in 1901.

  7. Elizabeth Violet Woods was born on 10 December 1903 at Wood House Cottage in Loxwood, Wisborough Green.  Her father was then a general labourer.  She was known as Bessie.  She died on 5 August 1984 in Australia.

Bessie married Frederick John Warman on 26 December 1929 in Portslade, Sussex.

Fred was born on 9 January 1902 in Brighton and died on 7 November 1972 in Australia.  He was the son of Arthur Edward Warman (1872-1918) and Flora Boorman (1868-1952).
