My Whiteman Ancestors

A 4x Great Grandmother was Mary Godfrey Whiteman (1776-1848), who was born in Udimore, Sussex.  She married John Bourne (1770-1855) there in 1796.  The couple settled at first in Dallington, Sussex and then in Brightling, Sussex, which is where they were both buried.

Mary was the daughter of Thomas Whiteman (1729-1810) and Sarah Fuller (1738-1809).  They raised their family of 4 children to adulthood in Udimore.  Their youngest and fifth child died aged 3 years.

Thomas was the son of John Whiteman (c1700-1765) and Susanna Dunster (c1700-1776).  This was Susanna's second marriage and possibly a second marriage for John.

So far I have been unable to find a baptism for John which I would guess was in the 1690's - he may have first married in February 1720.  My best guess for the moment is that he was the son of Edward Whiteman (c1655-1702) and Maria Chester (1658-?) who had married in Peasmarsh in 1682.

However, there were the following marriages of possible parents:

William Whiteman married Mary Hofer on 14 April 1687 in Sedlescombe, Sussex.

Thomas Whiteman married Ann Grayling on 7 August 1692 in Mountfield, Sussex.

John Whiteman married Elizabeth Wickham on 29 November 1693 in Salehurst, Sussex.

When John's son Thomas made his will in 1805, one of the witnesses was Richard Chester, although for the moment I don't know anything of Richard's background, so don't know if he was possibly related to the Maria Chester married to Edward Whiteman.
