George VIRGO
(1709-1780)
and Mary SIMMONDS (c1720-1787)

George Virgoe
and Mary Simmonds married by banns on 18 October 1748 in Twineham,
Sussex. He was then of Ditchling, Sussex and she of Twineham.
(They were not my direct ancestors.)
George Virgo
was baptised on 17 April 1709 in Ditchling. He was the son of Gorge
Virgo and Mary Lambert. He was buried on 18 March 1780 in
Twineham.
Mary Simmonds's
date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me. She was buried on
12 May 1787 in Twineham.
George Virgo and Mary Simmonds had
5 known children:

David Virgo
was baptised on 25 February 1749 in Twineham. He was buried on 23
November 1808 in Twineham. David married twice. Firstly to
Amy Martin by banns on 29 August 1774 in Hurstpierpoint, Sussex.
He was then of Clayton, Sussex and she of Hurstpierpoint. She may
have been baptised on 21 June 1744 in Newtimber, Sussex and have been the
daughter of Thomas Martin and Elizabeth Page. Amy
was buried on 20 April 1789 in Twineham. David and Amy had 6
known children:

Thomas Virgo
was baptised on 5 January 1775 and buried on 4 May 1849. He
married Frances Juniper on 3 December 1804 in Keymer, Sussex.
They had the following children:

Stephen
Virgo was born in 1813 in Twineham. When the 1881 census was
recorded he was inmate at the Cuckfield Union Workhouse and he was
then an unmarried 69 year old agricultural labourer.

James
Virgo was baptised on 6 September 1814. He died on 14
February 1899 in New Glenelg, South Australia. He married twice.
Firstly to Lucy Luxford by banns on 26 June 1837 in Brighton,
Sussex. He was then a bachelor and she a spinster and they were
both of Brighton. She was born on 12 February 1812 and died of
Peritonitis on 8 November 1863. James and Lucy emigrated to
Australia on board the ship "Resource". They arrived in Port
Adelaide on 23 January 1839 and settled in North Adelaide where James
was a storekeeper and postmaster. They were Methodists.
James then married Catherine Simcock on 25 August 1868.

David
Virgo was baptised on 11 May 1817. He died on 30 April 1887.
David married Ann Boniface on 6 July 1845 in Slaugham, Sussex.
She may have been baptised on 21 October 1821 in Slaugham and have
been the daughter of Richard Boniface and Sarah Clifton.
They emigrated to Australia on board the ship "Royal Charlie" in 1854
and settled in Yahl Paddocks near Mount Gambier

William
Virgo was born in 1819 in Twineham. When the 1881 census was
recorded he was a 62 year old schoolmaster living at Holme Endowt
School in Tonbridge, Kent, along with his 35 year old wife Martha
and 11 year old son Eustace Virgo.

Virgo was born in 1821.

Mary
or Ann Virgo was born in 1823.

Henry
Virgo was born in 1827.

Amy Virgo
was baptised on 5 October 1777.

David Virgo
was baptised no 4 July 1779.

George Virgo
was baptised on 3 March 1782 in Albourne, Sussex.

Elizabeth
Virgo was baptised on 9 May 1784 and buried on 22 July 1788.

John Virgo
was baptised on 18 November 1787 and buried on 17 March 1790.
As a widower,
David married Ann Solsey, a widow, by banns on 2 February 1792
in Twineham. They were both then of Twineham.

George Virgo
was born in 1753 in Twineham. He may have been buried on 5 October
1806 in Twineham.

Lydia Virgo
was born in 1755 in Twineham. She married John Still on 30
May 1784 in Hurstpierpoint. They had 2 known children:

Mary Still
was baptised on 14 February 1790 in Hurstpierpoint.

John Still
was baptised on 20 January 1792 in Hurstpierpoint.

Charity Virgo was born in 1757 in
Twineham. She was buried on 24 June 1794. Charity married
Richard Knight by banns on 25 August 1776 in Twineham. They
were both then of Twineham.
Richard may have been baptised on 7 July 1751
in Twineham and have been the son of
Richard Knight (c1719-1757) and
Mary Matthew (1723-1816).
However, Mary married again and had another son named Richard by her second
husband. Richard and Charity had 6 known
children:

Richard
Knight was baptised on 2 November 1777 in Twineham. He was
buried on 8 April 1825.
Richard married Ann Hobden on 11 October
1802 in Woodmancote, Sussex. Richard was then of Hurstpierpoint
and Ann was a spinster.
Ann was baptised on 15 April 1781 in
Henfield, Sussex and was the daughter of Thomas Hobden and
Susanna Rickels. (Or, was she baptised in June 1780 in East
Chiltington, the daughter of Samuel Hobden of Falmer and Mary
Skinner of East Chiltington?)
Richard and Ann had the following children:

was baptised on 4 September 1803 in Twineham.

Knight was born about 1805/6 and died in June 1834 in Twineham.

Knight was baptised on 13 March 1808 in Twineham.

Susanna
Knight was baptised on 10 September 1809 in Twineham. She
died in May 1834. Susanna had 2 illegitimate sons:

Charity married
John Knapp by licence on 5 November 1805 in Brighton, Sussex.
Their marriage licence was issued by the Archdeaconry of Lewes on 31
October 1805. It recorded that she was a spinster of Brighton aged
23 years and upwards and he a bachelor of Brighton aged 21 years and
upwards.

was baptised on 12 August 1787 in Twineham.

Virgo was born in 1760 in Twineham. She married
William Tullett in 1779. (They have their own page.)
