William TULLETT (1757-1817)

and Phoebe VIRGO (1760-1836)

 

William Tullitt and Phoebe Virgo married on 20 June 1779 in Hurstpierpoint, Sussex.  (They were not my direct ancestors.)

William Toolet was baptised on 1 May 1757 in Nuthurst, Sussex.  He was the son of William Tullett (1714-1766) and Susan Feast.  William died aged 60 years and was buried on 4 September 1817 in Cowfold, Sussex, by the name of William Tulett.

Phoebe Virgo was born in 1760 in Twineham, Sussex.  She was the daughter of George Virgo (1709-1780) and Mary Simmonds (c1720-1787).  She died aged 76 years and was buried on 10 May 1836 in Cowfold, Sussex, by the name of Phoebe Tulett.

 

William Tullett and Phoebe Virgo had 11 known children:

  1. Sarah Tullet was baptised on 22 October 1780 in Shermanbury, Sussex.  She died aged 64 years and was buried on 13 March 1845 in Nuthurst.  When the 1841 census was recorded, 60 year old Sarah was a widow and living with the family of her son Edward Chart in Mannings Heath in Nuthurst.

    Sarah married William Chart by banns on 10 March 1812 at St. Andrew's in Nuthurst.  At the time they were both of Nuthurst.

    William died aged 54 years and was buried on 24 July 1831 in Nuthurst.

    William and Sarah had 2 known sons:

    1. Edward Chart was baptised on 19 September 1813 in Nuthurst.

      Edward married Emily Chart on 23 February 1836 in Nuthurst.  They were both then of Nuthurst.

      Emily was baptised on 21 June 1817 in Nuthurst, at which time her father was a farmer of Nuthurst.  She was the daughter of Edward Chart (1783-?) and Matilda Millyard.  Emily died aged 69 years and her death was registered in the second quarter of 1887 in the Guildford district.  (Emily's sister Eliza Chart married John Comber in 1839.)

      In 1841 the family were living in Mannings Heath and he was a farmer. 

      Edward and Emily had the following children:

      1. Amos Chart was baptised on 26 February 1837 in Nuthurst.  He was 4 years old when the 1841 census was recorded

        Amos married Mary Ann Stone on 11 October 1864 in Nuthurst.

        When the 1881 census was recorded Amos was a 44 year old widower and road surveyor living in Mannings Heath along with 2 sons and a 36 year old housekeeper Eliza J. Flint.

        Amos married for a second time in the third quarter of 1881 in the Cuckfield district to Ellen Ellis.  She was born about 1860 in Lewes, Sussex.  When the 1901 census was recorded the couple and their 5 children were living in Horsham and Amos was a coal merchant and sub postmaster.

      2. George Chart was baptised on 28 October 1838 in Nuthurst.  He may have died young.

      3. Emily Chart was baptised on 7 February 1841 in Nuthurst.  She was 5 months old at the time of the 1841 census.  She may have married Frederic W. Sired in the first quarter of 1866 in the Horsham district.

      4. Ellen Chart was baptised on 16 July 1843 in Nuthurst.

        Ellen married Daniel Richardson in the second quarter of 1867 in the Horsham district.  (The IGI records that Ellen married David Richardson on 9 January 1867 in Nuthurst).

        Daniel was born on 6 January and baptised on 19 March 1843 in Horsham.  He was the son of Daniel Richardson and Eliza Batchelor.

        When the 1881 census was recorded the couple (Ellen and Daniel) together with their 4 children and 15 year old boarder George Chart were living at 1 Norfolk Road, Horsham.  Daniel was then a Plumber.

      5. Mark Chart was baptised on 6 January 1848 in Nuthurst.  He died aged 60 years and his death was registered in the fourth quarter of 1907 in the East Preston registration district.

        Mark married Catherine Cucksey in the fourth quarter of 1869 in the Lambeth district.

        Catherine was born about 1848/9 in Godstone, Surrey.  She died aged 45 years and her death was registered in the second quarter of 1894.

        When the 1881 census was recorded the couple were living at 5 Moat Terrace in East Grinstead, Sussex and he was then a grocer and draper.  Also with them at the time was 18 year old Mary A. Budgen who was a general domestic servant.

        Mark married for a second time in the first quarter of 1895 to Jenny Bailye.  At the time of the 1901 census Mark and Jenny were living in East Grinstead and he was a provisions merchant.  Jenny was born about 1865 in East Grinstead.

      6. Eliza Chart was baptised on 20 April 1851 in Nuthurst.

      7. Esther Chart was baptised on 27 March 1853 in Nuthurst.

        Esther married John Briggs in the third quarter of 1874.

        When the 1881 census was recorded the couple and their 3 young children, together with her mother and a servant Fanny Ratford, were living at 9 Friary Street in Guildford.  John was then a butcher.

    2. John Chart was baptised on 23 July 1820 in Nuthurst.

  2. Jemima Tullett was baptised on 28 July 1782 in Shermanbury.  On 28 October 1802 a removal order was issued by the overseers of Westmeston parish returning Jemima to Cowfold, because she was a pregnant singlewoman.

    A marriage licence was issued on 5 November 1802 by the Archdeaconry of Lewes to Richard Vincent, a 19 year old bachelor who married with the consent of Hugh Vincent, and Jemima Tulett a 21 year old spinster of Westmeston.  I have not found their marriage.

    Richard was baptised on 11 May 1783 in Keymer and was the son of Hugh Vincent and Anne Standen.  According to the IGI Richard died on 26 June 1804.

    As a widow, Jemima Vincent married Thomas Stoner of Ditchling, by banns on 1 May 1810 in Cowfold.

  3. Phoebe Tullett was baptised on 8 August 1784 in Shermanbury.  She married John West in 1804.  (They have their own page.)

  4. Kitty Tulet was baptised on 28 December 1788 in Cowfold.  As Catherine Tullett she had an illegitimate daughter:

    1. Emily Tullett was baptised on 2 June 1816 in Cowfold and buried there on 13 December 1816.

    Catherine was a witness to the marriage of her brother James in November 1819, at which time she was unmarried.

  5. James Tulet was baptised on 20 February 1791 in Cowfold.

    As James Tullett he married Ann Goddard by banns on 6 November 1819 in Cuckfield, Sussex.  He was then a bachelor and she a spinster and they were both of Cuckfield.  The witnesses to the marriage were Charles Tullett, Catherine Tullett and Richard Anscombe.

    Ann died aged 46 years and was buried on 24 July 1840 in Cuckfield.

    James and Ann had the following children:

    1. Jemima Tullett was baptised on 28 July 1822 in Cowfold.  Her father was then a labourer.

    2. Sarah Ann Tulett was baptised on 5 September 1824 in Cowfold.  She was buried on 8 March 1913 in Cuckfield.

      As Sarah Ann Tullett she married William Godsmark on 13 November 1847 in Cuckfield.  She was then a spinster and he a bachelor and labourer.  They were both of full age and of Cuckfield.

      William was born about 1819 in Cuckfield and died in February 1892 in Ansty, Sussex.  He was the son of Richard Godsmark (1775-1862) and Mary Scott (1781-1860).

      William and Sarah Ann had the following children:

      1. Elizabeth Godsmark was born about 1846 in Brighton.

      2. Thomas Godsmark was born about 1849 in Cuckfield.  He married Mary Bowles on 15 November 1873 in Cuckfield.

      3. William Godsmark was born about 1853 in Cuckfield.  He died in Hailsham, Sussex in 1942.  William married Sarah Bowles in 1876.

      4. Mary Ann Godsmark was born about 1858 in Cuckfield.

      5. Adela Sarah Godsmark was born about 1865 in Cuckfield.

    3. John Tulett was baptised on 1 April 1827 in Cowfold.

    4. Ann Tulett was baptised on 9 September 1832 in Cowfold.  In 1841 she was 8 years old and living with her father.

      As Ann Tullett she married Thomas Partridge on 12 October 1851 in Cuckfield.  She was a spinster and he a bachelor and labourer.  They were both of full age and of Cuckfield.  The witnesses to the marriage were Henry Godsmark and Harriet Burtenshaw.

      Thomas was the son of Thomas Partridge.  In 1882 he was a Railway Porter.  He died before 1890.

      Thomas and Ann had the following children:

      1. Thomas James Partridge was born on 17 July 1854 in Brighton, Sussex.  He died in January 1949.

        Thomas married Mary Hallaway on 29 July 1890 in Fairlight, Sussex.

        Mary was born on 24 September 1860 in Brightling, Sussex and was the daughter of Stephen Hallaway (c1832-?) and Harriet Stonestreet (c1840-?).

        Thomas and Mary had 5 daughters.

      2. Phoebe Elizabeth Partridge was born about 1857 in Brighton.  When the 1881 census was recorded she was a 24 year old domestic servant in the home of Anne Simpson at 4 Woodland Road, Keymer, Sussex.

        Phoebe married Alfred Goddard on 4 March 1882.

        Alfred was born about 1853 in Cuckfield and was the son of George Goddard (c1816-?).

        Alfred and Phoebe had a daughter and 2 sons.

    5. Kitty Tullett was born about 1839.  In 1841 she was 2 years old and living with her father.

  6. John Tulet was baptised on 3 November  1793 in Cowfold.  When the 1851 census was recorded he was an unmarried 56 year old agricultural labourer living with his sister Phoebe at South Firle Knole in Cowfold.

  7. Peter Tulet was baptised on 8 June 1795 in Cowfold.  He most probably died as an infant.

  8. Charles Tulett was baptised on 29 June 1797 in Cowfold.  He died aged 64 years and was buried on 3 December 1862 in Lower Beeding.

    As Charles Tullett he married Mary Batchelor by banns on 8 April 1823 in Bolney, Sussex.  They were both then of Bolney.

    Mary was born about 1797-1802 in Bolney.  She died aged 66 years and was buried on 27 December 1868 in Lower Beeding.

    When the 1841 census was recorded the family were living in Cowfold and Charles was a farm labourer.  In 1851 the couple and 3 daughters were living in Lower Beeding and Charles was an agricultural labourer.

    Charles and Mary had the following known children:

    1. George Tulett was baptised on 28 September 1823 in Cowfold.  He married Ann Slaughter in 1851.  (They have their own page.)

    2. Emily Tullett was born about 1828 in Cowfold.  She was 13 years old in 1841 and living at home.  In 1851 she was an unmarried 25 year old living at home.

      Emily married twice. Firstly to George Gates.

      George was born about 1824 in Sussex.

      When the 1861 census was recorded the couple were living in Plumbersplain and George was a 37 agricultural labourer.

      As Emily Gates widow she married James Pestefield by banns on 3 April 1869 in Lower Beeding.  He was then a widower and servant.  Their fathers were named as Henry Pestefield and Charles Tulitt who were both labourers.  The witnesses to their marriage were William Walder and Elisabeth Everdon.

    3. Mary Tullett was born about 1830.  She was 11 years old in 1841 and living at home.

    4. Eliza Tulett was baptised on 20 November 1830 in Cowfold.  She was 6 years old in 1841 and living at home.  In 1851 she was 17 years old and still living with her parents.

    5. Harriet Tullett was born in 1840 in Cowfold.  She died aged 18 years and was buried on 13 January 1859 in Lower Beeding.  She was 7 months old when the 1841 census was recorded.  In 1851 she was 9 years old.

  9. Peter Tulett was baptised on 8 December 1799 in Cowfold.  He died aged 71 years and was buried on 19 December 1871 in Cowfold, by the name of Peter Tulett.  He did not marry.  In 1841 he was a 40 year old farm labourer living in the home of William Attree in Cowfold.  When the 1861 census was recorded he was lodging at Cotlands Cottage in Cowfold and he was then a 60 year old agricultural labourer.

  10. Rebecca Tulet was baptised on 14 February 1802 in Cowfold.

    As Rebecca Tulett she married William Pickard by licence on 18 May 1830 in Horsham.  Their marriage licence was dated 17 May 1830 and was issued by the Archdeaconry of Chichester.  It recorded that she was a 26 year old spinster and he a 45 year old widower and they were both of Horsham.

  11. Daniel Tullet was baptised on 2 November 1806 in Cowfold.  He died aged 18 years and was buried on 30 July 1825 in Cowfold, by the name of Daniel Tulett.
