James TULET (1764-1841)

and Sarah FRENCH (1765-1840)

Holy Trinity, Cuckfield, circa 1910 - from Tulet and Sarah French were my 4x Great Grandparents.  (Click here to see their place in my pedigree chart.)  They married by banns on 9 July 1787 in the parish church of Holy Trinity in Cuckfield, Sussex.  James was then a bachelor of Ardingly, Sussex and Sarah a spinster of Cuckfield.  The witnesses to their marriage were James Holden and Mary Juniper.

James Tullett was baptised on 18 March 1764 in Slaugham, Sussex.  He was the son of John Tullett (1734-1809) and Elizabeth Michell (c1735-1815).  James died on 1 January 1841 in the Hurstpierpoint workhouse and was buried on 4 January 1841 in Cuckfield.  His death certificate records that he was a 79 year old labourer (making his birth about 1761).  His cause of death was palsy.  His death was registered by Elizabeth Heaver, matron of Hurstpierpoint workhouse.  I wonder if James entered the workhouse after his wife's death in March 1840?

Sarah French was baptised on 20 January 1765 in Patcham, Sussex.  She was the daughter of Charles French (1730-1767) and Lucy Gadsby (c1737-1804).  Sarah died on 9 March 1840 at Cuckfield and was buried there on 15 March 1840.  Her death certificate records that she died aged 78 years (making her birth about 1762), and also that she was the wife of James Tulett, a labourer.  Her cause of death was decay of nature.  Her death was registered by William Tulett of Cuckfield, who was in attendance.  For more than 50 years, Sarah worked as a trusted and loyal servant at Cuckfield Place.  After her death, her employer, Mr. Sergison, placed a commemoration board to her memory in the Cuckfield churchyard.  This simple white painted board with black lettering is still in existence and regularly maintained.  James is mentioned on the reverse of the board, although I don't have any evidence that he also worked for the Cuckfield Place estate.  I don't know if Sarah lived at Cuckfield Place, in the servants' quarters; maybe she did before her marriage.  But is it likely that after her marriage her husband and children also lived there?

Might James and Sarah have lived with there son William in their old age?

James Tulet and Sarah French had 8 known children:

  1. Sarah Tulet was baptised on 30 September 1787 in Cuckfield.  She may have died before 1808.

  2. James Tulet was baptised on 21 March 1790 in Cuckfield.  He may have died aged 78 years and have been buried on 9 July 1866 in Cuckfield.

  3. Lucy Tulet was baptised on 8 July 1792 in Cuckfield.  She married Edward Batchelor in 1824.  (They have their own page.)

  4. William Tulet, my 3x Great Grandfather, was baptised on 13 December 1795 in Cuckfield.  He  married 5 42 Mary Knowles (1797-1860) in 1816.  (They have their own page.)

  5. Harriett Tulet was baptised on 11 November 1798 in Cuckfield.  She died aged 33 years, soon after her last child was baptised and was buried on 18 April 1830 in Lindfield.

Harriet married James Cox by banns on 11 May 1824 in Lindfield.  He was a bachelor and she a spinster and they were both of Lindfield.  The witnesses were John Cox and Harriet Botting.  They all made their X marks.  James was a labourer.

James and Harriet had 4 known children:

    1. Mary Ann Cox was baptised on 4 July 1824 in Lindfield.

    2. William Cox was baptised on 5 March 1826 in Lindfield.

    3. Eliza Cox was baptised on 20 January 1828 in Lindfield.

    4. Fanny Cox was baptised on 28 March 1830 in Lindfield.

  6. Mary Tulet was baptised on 16 August 1801 in Cuckfield.

Mary married William Upton by banns on 15 March 1831 in Cuckfield.  William was a bachelor and Mary a spinster and they were both of Cuckfield.  The witnesses were John Dancy and Harriet Upton.

  7. John Tulet was baptised on 13 May 1804 in Cuckfield.

  8. Sarah Tulet was baptised on 14 February 1808 in Cuckfield.

I don't have any evidence to prove that "my" Sarah French was the one baptised in 1765 in Patcham, but these are my reasons:  there had been several generations of Frenches in Cuckfield before Sarah's birth; the forename Charles was frequently used in the Cuckfield families; Sarah named a daughter Lucy, was this after her mother or just a coincidence?

Julie Cheesmanís 4x Great Grandfather John Batchelor was a coachman at Cuckfield Place.  He married Sarah Elizabeth Ward (1781-1843) in 1804 Cuckfield, so it is possible that John knew my Tullett ancestors!  John may have been born in 1787 Cuckfield the son of John Batchelor and Sarah.
