John STEEL (1707-1784)
and Elizabeth BARTHOLOMEW (1713-1791)

John Steel
and
Elizabeth Bartholomew
were, I believe, my 7x Great Grandparents. (Click
here to
see their possible place in my pedigree chart.) The
banns for their marriage were published in Pycombe, Sussex on 19 October 1732.
He was then of Newtimber, Sussex and she of Hurstpierpoint, Sussex.
John Steel
was baptised on 23 March 1706/7 in
Hurstpierpoint, Sussex. He was the son of
5
313
Richard Steel
and
5
313
Ann Midhurst
(1669-?). He was buried on 3
April 1784 in Newtimber, Sussex.
Elizabeth Bartholomew
was baptised on 8 July 1713 in
Hurstpierpoint. She was the daughter of
John
Bartholomew (c1687-?) and
Dorothy
Osborne (1689-?). She was
buried on 23 August 1791 in Newtimber and the burial register recorded that
she was Elizabeth Steele, widow.
John Steel and Elizabeth
Bartholomew had 3 known children:
-
Elizabeth Steel, my 6x Great
Grandmother, was baptised on 13 May 1733 in Hurstpierpoint. She married
William
Terry in 1755. (They have
their own page.)
-
Ann
Steel was baptised on 24 April
1737 in Newtimber, Sussex. She married
William Woolven in 1756.
(They have their own page.) (An Ann Steel married
Jonathan Burton by banns on 12 February 1771 in
Newtimber. He was then a sojourner and they were both of Newtimber.
For the moment I'm not sure if or how this Ann may be related.)
-
John Steel
was baptised on 21 June 1747 in Newtimber.
He married
Frances Pannett in 1774. (They have their own page.)
The Sussex marriage index records that a John Steel married
Elizabeth Blackmoor on 7 July 1743 in Keymer, Sussex. Given
that Keymer is not far from Newtimber, is it possible that this was John's
second marriage? The Newtimber burial register does not record the
burial of any Steels between 1737 and 1747. However, there was a
John Steel baptised on 1 January 1724 in Hurstpierpoint, the son of
Thomas Steel and Mary, so he may have been the one who married
in 1743.
Could the following be related in any way?
