Richard STEDMAN (c1700-?)

and Ann SIMMONDS (1703-?)

 

Richard Stedman and Ann Simmonds married on 2 February 1732/3 in Ardingly, Sussex.  At the time of their marriage Richard was of Slaugham and Ann of Ardingly.

Richard Stedman may have been baptised on 12 October 1698 the son of Richard Stedman and Jane Ward (which I think most likely), or on 16 May 1701 the son of John Stedman and Elizabeth Sawyer.  Both baptisms took place in Slaugham.

Ann Simmonds was born on 3 July 1703 and baptised on 5 November 1703 in Ardingly.  She was the daughter of 5 223 Thomas Symmonds (c1666-1748) and 5 223 Sarah Burleigh (c1672-1754).

It would appear there were 2 Richards who had children baptised in Slaugham at the same time.  The other Richard Stedman was of Cuckfield and had married Ann Tasker in 1728.  I am assuming the baptisms in 1698 and 1701 relate to the 2 Richards, but which was which?

At the Lewes Quarter Sessions held on 11 and 12 January 1739 a removal order was confirmed to remove Richard Stedman his wife Anne and their children Anne, Richard and Thomas from Bolney to Slaugham.

 

Richard Stedman and Ann Simmonds may have the following children:

  1. Anne Stedman was born on 8 April and baptised on 12 May 1734 in Slaugham.  Both her parents were named in the baptism register.  She may have married Edmund Ford by licence on 8 July 1754 in Slaugham.  He was from Chailey, Sussex.  The witnesses to their marriage were Richard Stedman and Nathanial Bristed.

  2. Richard Stedman was baptised on 20 April 1735 in Slaugham.  Only his father’s name was recorded in the baptism register.

    Richard married Sarah Orton on 16 April 1760 in Slaugham.

    Richard and Sarah had 3 known children:

    1. Jemima Stedman was baptised on 5 March 1761 in Slaugham and buried there on 8 April 1761.

    2. Mary Stedman was baptised on 3 June 1762 in Slaugham.

    3. Richard Stedman was baptised on 8 October 1764 in Slaugham.

  3. Thomas Stedman was baptised on 15 August 1736 in Slaugham.  Only his father’s name was recorded in the baptism register.

  4. Martha Stedman was baptised on 17 September 1742 in Slaugham.  Only her father's name was recorded in the baptism register.

  5. A child of Richard Stedman was baptised on 15 January 1743/4 in Slaugham.
