Thomas SYMMONDS (c1666-1748)

and Sarah BURLEIGH (c1672-1754)

 

Thomas Symmonds and Sarah Burleigh married on 28 July 1699 in Ardingly, Sussex.  Nothing further was recorded in the marriage register.  (At one point I had thought Thomas and Sarah were my ancestors, but have since realised they were not.)

Thomas Symmonds may have been born about 1664-6 in Ardingly or the surrounding area.  He was most probably the son of 5 244 Hugh Symmons (1626-1688) and 5 244 Susan Elliotte (1638-1722).  He died aged 84 years and was buried on 12 May 1748 in Ardingly. 5 223

Sarah Burleigh died aged 82 years and was buried on 3 May 1754 in Ardingly.  Therefore, she was born about 1672.  The closest baptism I have so far found was on 10 May 1674 in East Grinstead, the daughter of 5 248 William Burley (1630-?) and 5 248 Anne Brooker (1645-?).  But, a Sarah Burley married George Jenner by banns on 20 February 1697/8 in Cuckfield, Sussex and the register records they were both single.

 

Thomas Symmonds and Sarah Burleigh had 4 known children:

  1. Sarah Simmonds was born on 6 August 1700 and baptised on 31 August 1700 in Ardingly.  She married Edward Marchant (1696-1761) in 1728.  (They have their own page.)

  2. 5 137 Ann Simmonds was born on 3 July 1703 and baptised on 5 November 1703 in Ardingly.  She married Richard Stedman in 1733.  (They have their own page.)

  3. Thomas Simmonds was born on 29 April and baptised on 15 May 1705 in Ardingly.  He may have died before 1782.  He may have married Mary who died aged 72 years and was buried as a widow on 10 January 1782 in Ardingly.

  4. Hugh Simmonds was baptised on 11 October 1707 in Ardingly.

    As Hugh Simmonds he may have married Ann Marchant on 22 April 1725 in Balcombe, Sussex, and/or Elizabeth Randal on 27 December 1727 in Plumpton, Sussex.  However, he did have 2 cousins named Hugh:  Hugh Symonds born 1697 and Hugh Symonds born in 1707. 

 

Could the following be the possible parents of Sarah:

Edward Burly and Mary Hobdy married on 5 May 1664 in West Hoathly, Sussex.

Thomas Burly and Mary Grun married on 17 May 1659 in East Grinstead, Sussex.
