Hugh SYMONS (c1567-1612)
and Elizabeth STREETER (?-?)

Hughe Symons
and
Elizabeth Streeter
married on
21 September 1591 in Worth, Sussex.
Hugh Symons’s
date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me, but possibly in the 1560’s. According to
the IGI a Hugh Symonde
was baptised on 20 January 1567 in
Abinger, Surrey as the son of
Richard Symonde.
He may have been buried on 14 January 1611/2 in Worth as
Hugh Simmon,
but the burial register just records the name and no further details. Hugh may
have had a brother named
John Simon,
whose occupation was recorded as “Nailer” at the burial of a son Hugh on 22 June
1587 in Worth. Hugh Symons of Worth left a will which was
proved on 21 January 1611/2 in Lewes - I have yet to read this will.
Elizabeth Streeter’s
date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me, but possibly in the 1560’s or 1570's - see
Streeter main page. I have not
found a burial for her in either Worth or Ardingly. She may have had a brother
named James Streater
who was possibly buried on 7 March
1599/1600 in Worth.
Hugh Symons and Elizabeth
Streeter had 6 known children:
-
Johane Symons
was baptised on 4 June 1592 in Worth.
-
Richarde Symons
was baptised on 10 March 1593/4 in Worth.
Richard
may have married
Elizabeth Hicks on 9 May 1613 in
Horsted Keynes, Sussex and/or
Mary Wright
in October 1633 in West Hoathly, Sussex. But
there were 2 other Richard’s baptised in Worth: on 25 July 1586 the son of
John Simons
and on 26 November 1598 the son of
Henry Symons
and
Agnes.
None of the 3 would seem to have been buried in Worth before 1650.
-
Elizabeth Symons
was baptised on 27 June 1596 in Worth and
probably died young, although I have not found her burial recorded in the
Worth register.
-
John Symons was baptised on 4 March 1598/9 in Worth.
He married
Mary Millam
(1599-?)
in 1620. (They have their own page.)
-
Alexander Simondes
was baptised on 14 June 1601 in Worth.
As
Alexander Symons
he may have married
Joane Gallop on 16 May 1637 in
Ardingly. But an
Alexander Simmons was baptised on 24
March 1615/6 in Cuckfield, Sussex as the son of
Thomas Simmons.
I have not found any children baptised to them in Ardingly or Worth. Although
from the IGI it would seem that Alexander and Joane moved to Lancing, Sussex
where they had 6 known children baptised:
Alexander Symmons
(1638-1638),
Edward Symmons
(1638-1638), Ann
Symones (1640-?),
Joane Symmondes
(1642-?),
Alexander Simons
(1647-?) and
Sarah Simants
(1649-?).
-
Elizabeth Symons
was baptised on 7 November 1603 in Worth.

I am grateful to Colin Parker, a fellow
descendant of Hugh and Elizabeth, who identified them as the parents of John
Symons.
