My Setford Ancestors
I join the Setford tree with a 2x Great Grandfather,
Thomas Setford
(1838-1905), who it is strongly believed was the father of my illegitimately
born Great Grandfather,
Thomas William Tullett
(1862-1911). Thomas senior married Thomas junior's mother,
Catherine Tullett
(1836-1924), 4 months after the birth baby Thomas. In the 1871 and
1881 census Thomas junior was recorded as Thomas Setford son of
Thomas and Catherine. But when junior married in 1884 he did so in the
name of Tullett and his father's name was not recorded on the marriage
certificate.
The family story passed on to me by my
mother is that when Thomas, junior, died in 1911, his wife told their
children that they should have been Setford's and not Tullett's.
Thomas Setford (1838-1905) was
the son of Henry Setford who died aged 44 in 1838, just 4 months
after his son Thomas was born. Therefore, Henry was born about 1794,
but so far I have not found his baptism. I have checked the East
Sussex Baptism Index, but nothing was found. Other Setford baptisms also
seem to be missing, or individuals were baptised as adults.
Henry Setford (1794-1838) married
Hannah Sawyers (1814-1882) in 1832 in Chailey, which is where their 4
children were baptised, but Henry was buried in Newick.
The Setford clan is not all that large
and they seem to have arrived in Sussex in about the 1750's. Might
they have originated from Hampshire? The first known Sussex Setford
couple were described as 'Travellers'. Could this imply they were
gypsies? But they did not have gypsy sounding names, which could mean
they were just in search of work.
Might the surname Setford be a corruption of the place name of Sidford in
Hampshire?
I am slowly trying to include details of all Sussex Setfords, in an effort
to try and work out who belonged to which family.
