James RICHARDSON (1783-1855)

and Ann WOOLVIN (1789-1880)

James Richardson and Ann Woolven married by banns on 19 April 1808 in Cowfold, Sussex.  The witnesses to their marriage were Thomas Steele and Sarah Richardson.  (They were not my direct ancestors.)

James Richardson was baptised on 21 December 1783 in Shermanbury, Sussex.  He was the son of Henry Richardson (1754-1836) and Elizabeth Field (c1757-1843).  He died aged 74 years and was buried on 29 March 1855 in Cowfold.  His paternal grandparents were Henry Richardson and Ann Lindfield.

Ann Woolvin was baptised on 14 June 1789 in Cowfold and the baptism register noted that her parents were paupers.  She was the daughter of John Woolven (c1752-1815) and Sarah Lelliot (1755-1823).  She died aged 91 years and was buried on 30 June 1880 in Cowfold.

In 1841 the couple were living at Hill Farm Cottage in Cowfold.  He was a 55 year old farm labourer and she was 50.  Also with the couple were 13 year of William Richardson, 14 year old shoemaker William Richardson and 42 year old Richard Woolven.

At the time of the 1851 census James was 69 years old and formerly a gardener.  Ann was then 63 years old.  The couple were living at Little Cotlands, Horsham Road, Cowfold, along with their son William and his wife, 2 grandsons and Ann's brother Richard.

James Richardson and Ann Woolvin had 7 known children:

  1. Elizabeth Richardson was baptised on 22 July 1810 in Cowfold.  She died aged 13 years and was buried on 31 July 1823 in Cowfold.

  2. Ann Richardson was baptised on 28 June 1812 in Cowfold.

  3. Henry Richardson was baptised on 4 June 1814 in Cowfold, at which time his father was a labourer.  Henry married Ann Roberts in 1838.  (They have their own page.)

  4. James Richardson was baptised on 2 February or March 1817 in Cowfold.

  5. Mary Richardson was baptised on 31 December 1820 in Cowfold.  She married Henry Linfield in 1840.  (They have their own page.)

  6. Richard Richardson was baptised on 1 June 1823 in Cowfold.

Richard married Mary Manvell by banns on 8 April 1845 in Cowfold.  Richard was a bachelor and a shepherd.  Mary was a spinster and a minor.  Their fathers were named as James Richardson a gardener and James Manvell a bricklayer.  The witnesses to their marriage were William Longhurst and Sarah Longhurst.

Mary may have died aged 22 years and have been buried on 25 March 1847 in Cowfold.

Richard and Mary had the following child:

    1. James Richardson was baptised on 25 January 1846 in Cowfold.  He died aged 44 years and was buried on 9 February 1890 in Cowfold.  He was 5 years old in 1851 and living with his grandparents.

  7. William Richardson was baptised on 24 September 1826 in Cowfold.  He was most probably 13 years old in 1841 and living with his parents in Cowfold.

William married Jane Hamshar by banns on 1 December 1849 in Cowfold.  William was a bachelor and labourer, whilst Jane was a spisnter.  Their fathers were named as James Richardson and William Hamshar who were both labourers.  The witnesses to their marriage were Richard Richardson and Henry Hill.

Jane was baptised on 20 August 1826 in Rudgwick, Sussex and was the daughter of William Hampshire and Amelia.
