James MATTHEW
(1682-1754)
and Mary WOOLVEN (1687-?)

James
Matthew and Mary Woolven were my 6x Great Grandparents.
(Click
here to see their place in my pedigree chart.) They married
by licence on 19 May 1709 at the parish church of St. Peter in Twineham,
Sussex. They were both then of Twineham. Their marriage licence
was issued by the Archdeaconry of Chichester in April 1706 and it recorded
their names as James Matthewes and Mary Woolvin of Twineham.
Sponsors for the licence were Henry Woollven and David Foster.
James Matthew was baptised on 5 May 1682 in Bolney, Sussex. He
was the son of
James
Matthews (1659-1728) and
Joan Mitchell
(1657-1737). He was a farmer. James died in 1754, after the
death of his son James, and was buried in Twineham as James Matthews,
senior.
Mary Woolven was baptised on 17 December 1687 in Twineham. She
was the daughter of
Henry
Woolven (1655-1720) and
Mary Jupp
(c1660-1731). She may have been buried on 14 January 1773 in Twineham,
but the burial may have refered to a daughter-in-law or granddaughter.

Sarah Matthew was baptised on 6 March 1709/10 in Twineham.

James Matthew was baptised on 11 April 1711 in Twineham. James
died in 1754, before his father, and was buried in Twineham as James Matthews, junior.
James
married Mary Haselgrove by licence on 27 June 1744 in Bolney.
He was then of Twineham and she of Bolney.
James and Mary had 1 known son:

James Matthews was baptised on 8 July 1744 in Bolney. He died
aged 64 years and was buried on 20 June 1809 in Bolney. The burial
register records that he was Mr. James Matthew of Worth in Sussex.
James's widow, Mary Matthews may have married John Heasman by
licence on 10 October 1758 in Bolney.

Thomas Matthew was baptised on 9 September 1715 in Twineham.
Thomas
married Ann Reeve on 6 April 1738 in Shermanbury, Sussex.
Thomas and Ann had 6 known children:

James Matthews was baptised on 22 June 1739 in Shermanbury.

Mary Matthews was baptised on 28 June 1741 in Shermanbury. She
may have married John Anscombe by banns on 9 July 1769 in Cowfold,
Sussex. John was then of Bolney and Mary of Cowfold. The
witnesses to the marriage were George Vinall and Eliza Anscombe.
John and Mary may have had the following children:

John Anscomb was baptised on 31 October 1774 in Bolney and buried
there on 24 January 1778.

Mark Anscomb may have been part of this family.

Thomas Matthews was baptised on 24 July 1743 in Twineham, although at
the time his parents were of Shermanbury.

John Matthews was baptised on 24 August 1746 in Twineham. Only
his father's name was recorded in the baptism register.

Charles Matthews was baptised on 28 August 1748 in Twineham. He
died aged 55 years and was buried on 24 October 1803 in Cuckfield. He
may have married Sophia Waller on 3 December 1778 in Bolney.
Charles and Sophia had the following children:

1723 in Twineham. She married twice. Firstly to

in 1747 and then to

John Matthew was baptised on 14 February
1724/5 in Twineham. He died aged 74 years on 15 April 1798 and was
buried on 18 April 1798 in Shermanbury.
John married Jane Worsfold
on 23 April 1752 in Shermanbury.
Jane was baptised on 6 April 1730 in Shermanbury and was the daughter of
John Worsfold and Mary Butcher. She died aged 77 years on
29 May 1807 and was buried with her husband on 2 June 1807 in Shermanbury.
John and Jane had 5 known children:

Jane Matthews was baptised on 12 April 1761 in Shermanbury and buried
there on 3 May 1761.

Martha Matthews was baptised on 20 June 1762 in Shermanbury and
buried there on 6 August 1764.

John Matthews was baptised on 3 May 1765 in Shermanbury. He
died aged 63 years on 11 January 1828 in Henfield and was buried on 15 January 1828 in
Shermanbury.

Sarah Matthews was baptised on 30 September 1768 in Shermanbury.
Sarah married Thomas Ward by licence on 22 September 1791 in
Shermanbury. He was a bachelor of Henfield and she a spinster of
Shermanbury. He signed his name and Sarah made her mark. The
witnesses to the marriage were William Stanford (signed) and
Abigail Woolven (marked). (Abigail may have been the wife of
Richard Woolven.)
Thomas was baptised on 3 March 1765 in Henfield, Sussex and was the son of
Thomas Ward and
Elizabeth Nicholson.

Richard Matthews was baptised on 1 February 1773 in Shermanbury and
buried there on 4 September 1773.

Charles Matthew was baptised on 26 March 1727 in Twineham. He
was buried on 30 May 1776 in Albourne, Sussex.
Charles married Jane
Jupp by banns on 23 August 1756 in Albourne.
Jane was born about
1738 and was buried on 21 December 1786 in Albourne.

Charles married Ann Goddard by banns
on 18 January 1788 in Henfield. He was then a bachelor of
Hurstpierpoint and she a spinster of Henfield who married with consent.
The witnesses to their marriage were David Goddard and Thomas Knight.
Ann was baptised on 18 December 1770 in Hurstpierpoint and was the daughter
of David Goddard and Mary Johnson.

William married twice, firstly to Lucy Marchant by banns on 19
December 1815 in Keymer, Sussex. He was then a bachelor of
Hurstpierpoint and she a spinster of Keymer. The witnesses to their
marriage were James Matthews and Richard Tulley. As a
widower he married Ann Banfield, widow, on 27 October 1822 in
Hurstpierpoint.

Phoebe Matthews was baptised on 3 August 1794 in Hurstpierpoint.
She may have married John Nutley by banns on 3 July 1811 in Brighton,
Sussex. They were both then of Brighton. John was a bachelor and
Phoebe a spinster.

George Matthews was baptised on 6 January 1797 in Hurstpierpoint.
On 7 November 1818 a warrent was issued by the overseers of Hurstpierpoint
for the examination of Philadelphia Lee, singlewoman who had named
George Matthew, labourer as the father of her illegitimate 3 month old
daughter.

Elizabeth Matthews was baptised on 3 March 1799 in Hurstpierpoint.

Mary Matthews was baptised on 29 November 1801 in Hurstpierpoint.

Peter Matthews was born on 27 January 1804 and baptised on 25 March
1804 in Hurstpierpoint.

December 1782 in Shermanbury.
Nicholas married
Elizabeth Norman
on 2 May 1758 in Slaugham, Sussex.
Elizabeth was born on 21 November
1725 and baptised on 26 November 1725 in Henfield. She was the
daughter of
John Norman
(1698-1762) and
Susan
Richardson (1699-1762), who were my 6x Great Grandparents.
Nicholas and Elizabeth may have had the following children:

Nicholas Matthews may have been part of this family. He
died aged 83 years and was buried on 31 December 1843 in Shermanbury.
Nicholas married Elizabeth before 1791. No possible
marriage has been found for them in the Sussex marriage index.
When the 1841 census was recorded, 80 year old Nicholas was an
agricultural labourer living at Wineham in Shermanbury along with 65
year old Elizabeth. She may have died aged 83 years and have been
buried on 24 October 1855 in Shermanbury. At the time of the 1851
census, 78 year old Elizabeth was living alone in Wyneham Lane,
Shermanbury. She then gave her place of birth as Albourne.
She may have been the Elizabeth King who was baptised on 31 May
1772 in Albourne, the daughter of William King and Martha
Winter.
Nicholas and Elizabeth had the following children:

James Matthews was baptised on 20 November 1791 in Albourne,
Sussex. He died aged 70 years and was buried on 12 November 1861
in Shermanbury.

Elizabeth Matthews was baptised on 21 April 1793 in Albourne.
Elizabeth may have married John Standford by banns on 8 April
1817 in Shermanbury. He was then a bachelor and she a spinster and
they were both of Shermanbury and both made their marks. The
witnesses to their marriage were Elizabeth Walder and James
Dewdney who both signed their names.

William Matthews was baptised on
17 January 1795 in Shermanbury. He died aged 64 years and was
buried on 18 February 1859 in Shermanbury.
William married Abigail Sayers by licence on 20 May 1822 in
Twineham, Sussex. He was then a bachelor and she a spinster and
they were both of Twineham. The witnesses to their marriage were
Edmund Davey and ? Botting.
Abigail was baptised on 23 September 1805 in Twineham and was the
daughter of John Sayers and Sarah.

John Matthews married
Ann Mansbridge in 1844.

Henry Matthews was baptised on 5 February 1797 in Shermanbury.

Catherine Matthews was baptised on 5 February 1797 in
Shermanbury. Catherine married Henry Newman by banns on 29
May 1817 in Shermanbury. He was then a bachelor and she a spinster
and they were both of Shermanbury and both made their marks. The
witnesses to their marriage were Nicholas Matthews (marked) and
James Dewdney who signed his name.

John Matthews was baptised on 18 January 1801 in Shermanbury.

Ann Matthews was baptised on 15 August 1802 in Shermanbury.

Mary Matthews was baptised on 25 March 1804 in Shermanbury.
She died aged 17 years and was buried on 20 September 1821 in
Shermanbury.

Peter Matthews was baptised on 13 March 1808 in Shermanbury.
Peter married Sarah Anscombe by banns on 25 November 1834 in
Shermanbury. He was then a bachelor and she a spinster and they
were both of Shermanbury and both made their marks. The witnesses
to their marriage were Thomas Matthews and Caroline Matthews
and they both made their marks.

Stephen Matthews was baptised on 1 July 1810 in Shermanbury and
buried there on 4 August 1810.

Jane Matthews was baptised on 17 November 1811 in Shermanbury.

Nicholas Matthews was baptised on 27 March 1814 in Shermanbury,
at which time his father was a labourer. He was buried in
Shermanbury on 1 April 1814.

Caroline Matthews was baptised on 10 January 1819 in Shermanbury,
at which time her father was a labourer.

William Matthews was baptised on
24 July 1763 in Slaugham and buried there on 31 July 1763.
