Richard KNIGHT
(c1719-1757)
and Mary MATTHEW (1723-1816)

Mary Matthew was my 5x Great Grandmother. (Click
here
to see her place in my pedigree chart.) She married my 5x Great
Grandfather
Thomas
Hoadley in 1761/2 as her second husband. (They have their own
page.) Mary first married Richard Knight on 27 September 1747
at the parish church of St. Bartholomew
in Albourne, Sussex.
Richard Knight's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me,
although according to the IGI he may have been born about 1719. He was
buried on 24 August 1757 in Twineham, Sussex
Mary Matthew was baptised on 11 December 1723 in Twineham, Sussex.
She was the daughter of
James
Matthew (1682-1754) and
Mary
Woolven (1687-?). She died aged 92 years and was buried on 4
April 1816 in Woodmancote, Sussex.
Richard Knight and Mary
Matthew had 4 known children:
-
Richard Knight was baptised on 7
July 1751 in Twineham. He may have married
Charity Virgo on 25 August 1776 in Twineham. She was born in
1755 in Twineham and was the daughter of
George
Virgo (1709-1780) and
Mary
Simmonds (c1720-1787). But, Richard would seem to have had a
younger brother also named Richard, from his mother's second marriage.
-
Francis Knight
was born on 7 June 1753 and baptised on 23
June 1753 in Henfield.
-
John Knight was baptised on 21 March 1754
in Twineham. He married
Ann Gearing
in 1779. (They have their own page.)
-
Thomas Knight
was baptised on 20 February 1757 in
Twineham. He may have been a witness to the 1788 marriage of his
half brother
Richard Hoadley.
Thomas may
have first married Sarah Taylor by banns on 19 August 1783 in
Henfield. At the time he was described as a bachelor and sojourner
whilst she was a spinster. The witnesses to the marriage were
William Vinall and William Vinall, senior.
According to
the IGI he married Mary Ede on 11 April 1787 in Hurstpierpoint,
which also states he died 12 January 1842 in Hurstpierpoint. Mary
was baptised on 15 February 1758 in Cuckfield, Sussex and was the daughter
of Joseph Ede and Sarah. She was buried on 5 November
1845 in Hurstpierpoint (IGI data). The IGI also records the couple
had 8 known children:
-
Mary Knight was baptised on 24 January 1788 in Hurstpierpoint and
buried there on 14 April 1789.

Martha Knight was baptised on 12 June 1789 in Hurstpierpoint

He was buried on 1 February 1831.
