James KNIGHT (1868-?)

and Fanny CLARK (c1879-?)

James Knight and Fanny Ross Clark married in the fourth quarter of 1896 in the Horsham registration district.  (They were not my direct ancestors.  One of their sons married my mother's twin sister.)

James Knight was baptised on 8 November 1868 in Rudgwick, Sussex.  He was the son of John Knight (1844-?) and Sarah Woodhatch (1843-?).  The 1871 census records that he was 2 years old and living with his parents at Weyhurst in Rudgwick.  In 1881 he was a 13 year old agricultural labourer living at ???brooks Farm in Alford, Surrey, the home of 67 year old George Muggeridge.  In 1891 he was a single 23 year old agricultural labourer lodging in the home of Henry William Green at Woodland in Ewhurst, Surrey.

Fanny Clark was born about 1879 in Horsham, Sussex, although no baptism has been found for her in the Horsham parish registers.  Her birth may have been registered in the fourth quarter of 1879 in the Horsham registration district.  When the 1881 census was recorded, 1 year old Fanny Clarke was an inmate in Horsham Union Workhouse, along with her possible mother, 22 year old Ellen Clarke.  Ellen may have married George Peter Burchell in the third quarter of 1883 in Horsham registration district.  In 1891, Fanny may have been 12 year old Fanny Burchell, living with her grandfather Peter Burchell (1830-?) in Warnham, Sussex.  Her mother may have died aged 25 and have been buried on 13 July 1884 in Horsham.

At the time of the 1901 census, the couple and 3 children were living at Slatter Cottage in Billingshurst.  James was then a 32 year old carter on a farmer and Fanny was say to be 23.  When the 1911 census was recorded the couple and 6 of their children were living at Copse Green, Northchapel, Sussex.  James was then a 42 year old waggoner on a farm and Fanny was 36.

James Knight and Fanny Clark had 12 known children:

  1. George Knight was born about 1897 in Horsham.  In 1901 he was 4 years old.  He was a 14 year old house boy when the 1911 census was recorded.

  2. Ellen Sarah J. Knight was born in the first quarter of 1899 in Rudgwick.  She was 2 years old in 1901.  In 1911 she was 12 years old and at school.

  3. Edith Kate Knight was born in the fourth quarter of 1900 in Pulborough, Sussex.  At the time of the 1901 census she was 6 months.  She was 10 years old in 1911 and at school.

  4. Joseph Stephen Knight was born in the fourth quarter of 1901 in Billingshurst, Sussex.  In 1911 he was 9 years old.

  5. James Arthur Knight was born in the third quarter of 1904 in Billingshurst.  In 1911 he was 6 years old.  He was a witness to the 1948 marriage of his younger brother Jack.

  7. William H. Knight was born in the third quarter of 1911 in the Petworth registration district.

  10. Thomas Jack Knight was born on 1 December 1917 in Rudgwick.  He was known as Jack.  He died aged 91 years in his sleep at home on Friday 6 March 2009.  His funeral service took place on Monday 23 March 2009 at 1pm at St. Michaels and All Angels in Southwick and he was buried with his wife in the Downsway cemetery.  His son found him at 8.30am.  For many years, up until his retirement at the age of 75, he worked at the Hill Farm Dairy in Southwick.  Prior to that he had been a head heardsman.

Jack married Vera Irene Tullett on 14 August 1948 in Southwick, Sussex.  Vera was my mother's twin sister and the daughter of Thomas William Tullett (1891-1956) and Annie Elsie Stillaway (1898-1985).
