John JONES (1708-1760)

and Sarah BUTLER (c1712-?)

John Jones and Sarah Butler were my 6x Great Grandparents.  (Click here to see their place in my pedigree chart.)  They married on 15 September 1736 at the parish church of St. Mary The Virgin in Salehurst, Sussex.

John Jones was baptised on 21 January 1707/8 in Salehurst.  He was the son of John Jones (1680-1733) and Elizabeth Richardson (c1681-1777).  He was buried in Salehurst on 16 October 1760.

Sarah Butler's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me, but I am guessing that she was born about 1712 in Salehurst, and that she was the daughter of Thomas Butler (1665-?) and Hannah Hickes (1679-?).  They had 8 children baptised in Salehurst between 1703 and 1722 and would seem to have been the only Butler family in Salehurst at about the time Sarah may have been born.  Or, she may have been the daughter of John Butler and Mary Fagg who were of Burwash, Sussex, when they married in Mountfield on 26 February 1703/4, but I think this unlikely.  Given that John and Sarah named their first 2 daughters Elizabeth and Hannah, I am inclined to think they named them after their respective mothers, and therefore, Thomas and Hannah were the parents of Sarah.

The 1747 window tax assessment records that John Jones had 9 windows and was liable to a 2 shilling tax.  He was then living in the Robertsbridge borough.

John Jones and Sarah Butler had 9 known children:

  1. Elizabeth Jones was baptised on 13 February 1736/7 in Rye, Sussex.

  2. Hannah Jones was baptised on 17 December 1738 in Salehurst.

Hannah married Edward Merritt by banns on 20 November 1759 in Salehurst.  The witnesses to the marriage were Thomas Boots and Thomas Waghorne.

Edward was most probably a witnesses to the 1770 marriage of his sister-in-law, Mary Jones.

Edward and Hannah had the following children:

    1. Elizabeth Merritt was baptised on 27 May 1760 in Salehurst.  She most probably died as an infant or child.

    2. Thomas Merritt was baptised on 28 February 1762 in Salehurst.  He most probably died as an infant or child.

    3. John Merritt was baptised on 18 January 1764 in Salehurst.  He most probably died as an infant or child.

    4. Mary Merritt was baptised on 14 September 1766 in Salehurst.  Did she marry Jacob Stace of Hythe on 12 April 1787 in Northiam, Sussex?

    5. Edward Merritt was baptised on 6 December 1768 in Salehurst.

    6. Elizabeth Merritt was baptised on 17 January 1773 in Salehurst.  Did she marry Jonathan Parish by banns on 23 November 1802 in Ninfield, Sussex?  He was then a bachelor and she a spinster.

    7. Thomas Merritt was baptised on 20 June 1775 in Salehurst.

    8. Hannah Merritt was baptised on 13 June 1779 in Salehurst.

    9. John Merritt was baptised on 16 October 1781 in Salehurst.

  3. Mary Jones, my 5x Great Grandmother, was baptised on 31 December 1742 in Salehurst.  She married James Boorman in 1770.  (They have their own page.)

  4. Sarah Jones was baptised on 25 January 1743/4 in Salehurst.  She had 2 illegitimate children:

    1. John Jones was baptised on 2 April 1769 in Salehurst and buried there on 12 August 1840.

    2. Rebecca Jones was baptised on 5 January 1777 in Salehurst.  Rebecca married James Reed by banns on 21 March 1799 in Salehurst.  He was then of the Sussex Militia.  The witnesses to their marriage were John Thompson, James Woodgate and John Heathfield.

  5. John Jones was baptised on 26 April 1746 in Salehurst.  He died in February 1823.

  6. Ann Jones was baptised on 26 March 1748 in Salehurst.

  7. Jane Jones was baptised on 12 January 1749/50 in Salehurst.

  8. Daniel Jones was baptised on 6 February 1753 in Salehurst.  He died in 1826.

Daniel married Ann Ballard by banns on 26 April 1791 in Salehurst.  The witnesses were Isaac Lusted and John Heathfield.

Ann was baptised on 18 March 1759 in Salehurst and was the daughter of Thomas Ballard and Sarah.

Daniel and Ann had the following known children:

    1. On 4 August 1774 a maintenance order was served on Daniel Jones, blacksmith, for the maintenance of a child born to Ann Ballard.

    2. Ruth Ballard was baptised on 29 November 1778 in Salehurst.  The baptism register records that she was the illegitimate daughter of Ann Ballard.  As Ruth Jones she may have married James Adams on 11 December 1805 in Catsfield, Sussex.

    3. Samuel Ballard was baptised on 13 June 1784 in Salehurst.  The baptism register recorded that he was the illegitimate son of Ann Ballard and Daniel Jones.  As Samuel Jones of East Malling, he may have married Mary Brown by licence on 8 October 1810 in Salehurst.  The witnesses to the marriage were William West and John Heathfield.

    4. Charles Jones was baptised on 21 December 1791 in Salehurst.  Charles may have married Mary Ann Clapson by banns on 27 January 1812 in Salehurst.  The witnesses to the marriage were Joseph Clapson and John Heathfield.

    6. James Jones was baptised on 4 June 1796 in Salehurst.

    7. Henry Jones was baptised on 21 August 1798 in Salehurst.  Henry may have married Mary Piper on 14 June 1825 in Goudhurst, Kent.  He was then of Salehurst and she of Goudhurst.

    8. Edward Jones was baptised on 18 October 1801 in Salehurst.  Edward may have married Ann Stonestreet by banns on 25 April 1835 in Salehurst.  The witnesses to the marriage were Samuel Jones and Edward Heathfield.

  9. Samuel Jones was baptised on 5 October 1756 in Salehurst.
