Thomas HOADLEY
(1738-1823)
and Mary MATTHEW (1723-1816)

Thomas Hoadley and Mary Matthew were my 5x Great Grandparents.
(Click
here to see their place in my pedigree chart.) They married
on 20 October 1761 at the parish church of St. Peter's in Twineham, Sussex
(the Sussex marriage index gives 1762 - I need to double check the original
register). At the time of their marriage he was of Shermanbury
she was Mary Knight, widow. The witnesses to the marriage were
John Paine and Nicholas Meads. Mary had previously
married
Richard Knight on 27 September 1747 in Albourne, Sussex.
(They have their own page.)
Thomas Hordlee was baptised on 10 September 1738 in Slaugham, Sussex.
He was the third son and fourth child of
Richard Hoadley (1706-1742) and
Sarah Purvey
(1706-1743). He died aged 84 years and was buried on 26 September 1823 in
Henfield, Sussex. His
will was dated 2 July 1823 and proved on 18
October 1823 (I have a copy of this document). As he was only about 4
years old when he was orphaned, who raised him?
Mary Matthew was baptised on 11 December 1723 in Twineham, Sussex.
She was the second daughter and fifth child of
James
Matthew (1682-1754) and
Mary
Woolven (1687-?). She died aged 92 years and was buried on 4
April 1816 in Woodmancote, Sussex.
Thomas Hoadley and Mary
Matthew had 3 known children:
-
Richard Hoadley, my 4x Great Grandfather, was baptised on 17 February 1762 in Twineham,
Sussex. He married
Hannah Snashall in 1788. (They have their own page.) Might
he have been named after his Grandfather, rather than his mother's first
husband?
-
James Hoadley
was baptised on 1 July 1764 in Edburton,
Sussex.
He married Mary and/or Sarah. (They have their own
page.)
-
Sarah Hoadley
was baptised on 11 October 1767 in
Edburton. She was mentioned in her father’s will as the wife of
John Kirk,
but I have not yet found their marriage.
