Richard HOADLEY (1762-1829)

and Hannah SNASHALL (1763-1807)

and Mary SMITH (c1779-1840)

St. Peter's, Henfield, circa 1905 - from Hoadley and Hannah Snashall were my 4x Great Grandparents.  (Click here to see their place in my pedigree chart.)  They married by banns on 18 January 1788 at the parish church of St. Peter's in Henfield, Sussex.  He was then a bachelor and she a spinster.  The witnesses to their marriage were Thomas Knight and Richard Vinall.  (Thomas may have been Richardís half brother from his motherís first marriage to Richard Knight.)  After Hannah's death, Richard married Mary Smith on 15 November 1814 in Henfield.  Mary was then a spinster of Stockton, Worcestershire and she was unable to sign her name.

Richard Hoadley was baptised on 17 February 1762 in Twineham, Sussex.  He was the eldest son of 5 100 Thomas Hoadley (1738-1823) and 5 100 Mary Matthew (1723-1816).  Richard died aged 66 years on 26 January 1829 and was buried on 1 February 1829 in Woodmancote, Sussex.  Richard was unable to sign his name.  His will was dated 9 October 1827 and proved on 6 February 1829.  It mentions wife Mary who received his all his household effects for her natural life together with £14 per annum.  His 3 children, Thomas Hoadley, Christina Palmer, and John Hoadley received £5 and after Mary's death the residue to be divided into 4.  A quarter to each of his children and a quarter divided between his 2 grandchildren Mary Ann Gumbrell (1819-?) and William Gumbrell (1820-?) who were then living in Billingshurst.

Hannah Snashall was baptised on 3 July 1763 in Henfield, Sussex.  She was the youngest daughter and child of 5 142 Thomas Snashall (1727-1805) and 5 142 Ann Norman (1723-1804).  She was buried on 26 January 1807 in Henfield.

Mary Smithís date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  She died aged 61 years on 16 July 1840 and was buried in Woodmancote.  After Richardís death she married George Matthews on 1 June 1830 in Woodmancote, Sussex.

On 11 June 1802 Richard Hoadley was a witnesses to the marriage of Thomas Trusler, a bachelor of Cowfold and Elizabeth Burtenshaw, spinster.  Thomas was baptised on 13 March 1774 in West Grinstead and was the son of John Trusler and 5 142 Elizabeth Snashall (1746-?), and Elizabeth Snashall was the sister of Hannah Snashall (1763-1807) wife of Richard Hoadley.

Richard Hoadley and Hannah Snashall had 6 known children:

  1. Thomas Hoadley was baptised on 4 June 1788 in Woodmancote.  He was a cordwainer and shoemaker.  Thomas was buried on 26 March 1867 in Henfield.  He did not marry.  In 1841 he was living on Henfield Common.  When the 1861 census was recorded he was lodging the home of John Wood (51) and his wife Sarah Wood (52) at Surrey House in Henfield.

  2. Christian Hoadley was baptised on 7 November 1790 in Henfield.  She married William Palmer before 1827.  No possible marriage has been found in the IGI nor the Sussex or Surrey marriage indexes.

  3. Sarah Hoadley was baptised privately on 6 January 1793 in Henfield and buried there on 10 March 1794.

  4. Ann Hoadley was baptised on 24 August 1794 in Henfield.  She probably died young as she was not mentioned in her fatherís will.

  5. Mary Hoadley was baptised on 20 August 1797 in Henfield.  She married William Gumbrell sometime before or about 1818.  (They have their own page.)

  6. John Hoadley, my 3x Great Grandfather, was baptised on 7 April 1799 in Henfield.  He married Susan Norris in 1821.  (They have their own page.)
