The GATHERN Family of Sussex

Violet Tullett, nee GathernSo far, I have no known Gathern ancestors of my own, but my Aunt by marriage was Violet Lucy Gathern.  She married my Mum's brother, Denis Noel Tullett, in 1952.  At that time her family were living at 10 Ridgeway Close Southwick, Sussex, whilst the Tullett family was living next door at number 12.  Vi was the daughter of David William Gathern (1893-1953) and Violet Beatrice Bashford (1894-1968), and he had been born in Portslade, Sussex.  In the 1920's and 30's, David and his family were living in The Gardens, Southwick, opposite my Dad's Willard family.

David was the son of Albert Thomas Gathern (1867-?) and Eliza Caroline Akehurst (1873-?).  Albert was born in Southwick and Eliza in Portslade.  Albert was the son of James Gathern (1840-?) and Charlotte Hemsley (1843-?).  They had married in Southwick in 1864.  Charlotte was born in Brighton, Sussex, but James was from Bengeo in Hertfordshire.  His parents were David Gathern (c1800-1889) and Sarah Copeland.  According to the 1851 census, David was born in Middlesex and he was a book binder.
