Joshua DIXON (1769-1852)

and Jane SMITH (c1783-1827)

Joshua Dixon and Jane Smith were my 4x Great Grandparents.  (Click here to see their place in my pedigree chart.)  They married by banns on 6 September 1804 in the parish church of St. Nicholas in Guildford, Surrey.  Joshua was of the Guildford Barracks and Jane of St. Nicholas.

Joshua Dixon was baptised on 7 January 1770 in Henham, Essex.  He was the son of 5 110 John Dixon (1741-?) and 5 110 Susanna Brand (1740-?).  He died aged 84 years in Sun Street, Brighton and was buried on 17 October 1852 at St. Nicholas in Brighton.  He joined the 10th Light Dragoon Guards in 1795.  On his release from the army in 1814 he became a shoemaker.  In 1841 he was living in Carlton Row, Brighton along with his unmarried daughter Elizabeth and her son John.  By the time of the 1851 census he was an 82 year old Chelsea Pensioner (cordwainer) living at 31 Sun Street in Brighton.  Joshua was alone, but shared the property with the Lloyd family of three.

Jane Smith's date and place of birth and baptism are unknown, to me.  She died aged 43 years at North Steine Row and was buried on 13 May 1827 in Brighton.  A Jane Smith, twin daughter of John Heather and Ann Smith of Perry Hill, Worplesdon, Surrey was baptised on 3 January 1784, and was then buried as an infant.

Joshua Dixon and Jane Smith had 8 known children:

  1. Joshua Dixon was baptised on 24 June 1805 in Playden, Sussex.

  2. Sophia Dixon, my 3x Great Grandmother was baptised on 10 June 1809 at St. Nicholas, Brighton.  She married William Spicer in 1829.  (They have their own page.)

  3. Frances Dixon was baptised on 10 October 1811 in Brighton.

  4. Jane Dixon was baptised on 27 November 1814 in Brighton.  She may have married William Ede by banns on 23 August 1835 in Brighton.  She was then a spinster and he a bachelor and they were both of Brighton.  They both signed their names.  The witnesses to the marriage were Benjamin Markwick and Ann Davis who also both signed their names.

  5. Sarah Dixon was baptised on 9 February 1817 in Brighton.

  6. Elizabeth Dixon was baptised on 16 April 1820 in Brighton.  In 1841 she was a dressmaker.  She died aged 25 years in Sun Street and was buried on 23 July 1844 in Brighton.  She had an illegitimate son:

    1. John Dixon was born about 1839.

  7. Ann Dixon was baptised on 2 October 1821 in Brighton.  She died aged 1 year at North Steine Row and was buried on 16 November 1822 in Brighton.

  8. William Dixon was baptised on 13 July 1824 in Brighton and buried there on 10 August 1824.  He died at North Steine Row.
