The Will of
Jeremy BEARD (1588-1652)

In the name of God Amen I
Jeremy Beard
of Rottingdean in the County of Sussex yeoman doo make and declare this my
last will and testament in writeing in manner and forme following First
and above all things I give my soule unto the hands of god my Creator who I
am assured for his deere sonnes sake Jesus Christ my All-?--] Redeemer will
receive the same at my death and glorifie it for ever Item I give
and bequeath to the poore of the parish of Rottingdean twenty shillings to
be paid within one month after my death Item I give unto
Elizabeth my loveing wife five pounds to be paid within one month
after my death Item I give unto her stocke for the yard and a halfe
land in the Tenament Item I give unto her all my household stuffe
Item I give unto George Beard the sonne of
George Beard the yard and a halfe of Land which I bought of
Edward Elwood after my wife decease Item
I give unto John Susan Thomas and Richard
[--?--] children Thomas Beard deceased eight pounds equally
divided to be paid as they come of age Item I give unto
Jeremy Keale seaven pounds to be paid in halfe a yeare after my
death Item I give unto thee children of George Box
deceased twenty shillings a peece within a yeare after my death Item
I give unto Jeremy Beard sonne of
Robert Beard twenty nobles to be paid unto him when he comes of
age or when he is bound prencticed if they then need it And I give
unto his sister Susanna Beard twenty shillings to be paid
when shee comes of age Item I give unto William Box
his children twenty shillings a peece to be paid with one yeare after my
death Item I give unto the widow ?ardner of Sh??mand her sonne and
daughter my [--?--] six pounds to be paid with one yeare after my death
Item I give unto the two sisters of Jeremy Keale three
pounds a peese to be paid with one month after my death Item I give
unto William Beards children three pounds and tenn
shillings a peece to be paid to them within six weekes after my death
Item I give unto the children of Ann Nash the wife of
Anthony Nash fower pounds a peece to be paid within one
month after my death Item I give unto the children of
Elizabeth Cottingham children fourer pounds tenn shillings a peice
to be paid unto them at their dayes of marriage or at the age of one and
twenty years And if any of them dye before they come of age then
her or their parts to be paid to the Survivors Item I give unto
Sara Beard the daughter of Nicholas Beard
three pounds to be paid within six weekes after my death Item I
give unto the children of Stephen Howell two children three
pounds a peece to be paid within one yeare after my death Item I
give unto the children of John Weller deceased forty
shillings a peece to be paid within one yeare after my death Item I
give unto John ??ry children forty shillings a peece to be

all the rest of my goods and chattells my debts and legacies being paid and
funerall charges discharged I give and bequeath to my cosen Richard
Beard who I doo make the sole & whole executor of this my last will
In witness whereof I have here unto sett my hand and seale and publish this
my last will and testament the thirteenth day of December 1651 in the
pressence of Richard [--?--] John Beard and Thomas

This will was proved at London the last day of March in the yeare of our
Lord God one thousand six hundred fifty two before Nathaniel Brient
knight Doctor of Laws Master or keeper of the purogative court by the oath
of Richard Beard executor name in the said will to who was
comited administration of all and singular the goods chattells and debts of
the said deceased hee being first by vertur of a Comission well and truly to
administer
